We explore three fields of creative practice as they relate to contemporary anthropology. His books include Reel World: An Anthropology of Creation and the coedited volume Crumpled Paper Boat: Experiments in Ethnographic Writing, both also published by Duke University Press. In this module, we rethink creativity from a ‘post-humanist’ standpoint informed by new anthropological research, and interdisciplinary work on novelty, affect, desire, materiality, and material agency. In their company, Pandian explores the moral and political horizons of anthropological inquiry, the creative and transformative potential of an experimental practice.Īnand Pandian teaches anthropology at Johns Hopkins University. Le Guin, contemporary scholars like Jane Guyer and Michael Jackson, and artists and indigenous activists inspired by the field. A Possible Anthropology is an ethnography of anthropologists at work: canonical figures like Bronislaw Malinowski and Claude Levi-Strauss, ethnographic storytellers like Zora Neale Hurston and Ursula K. Still, its methods can reveal unseen dimensions of the world at hand, and radical experience as the seed of a humanity yet to come. Anthropology is no stranger to injustice and exploitation. Synopsis: In a time of intense uncertainty, social strife, and ecological upheaval, what does it take to envision the world as it yet may be? The field of anthropology, Anand Pandian argues, has resources essential for this critical and imaginative task.

When the real Yeager's body is found at an excavation site in the vicinity of that address, Archie crosses the threshold and finds a fantastically appointed love nest where Yeager secretly entertained many women. Too Many Clients is a Nero Wolfe detective novel by Rex Stout, published by the Viking Press in 1960, and later collected in the omnibus volume Three Aces (Viking 1971).Ī man who identifies himself as Thomas Yeager, head of Continental Plastics, asks Archie to ascertain whether he is being followed when he visits a certain address in one of New York's worst neighborhoods. While testing the iron maiden, the guide is attacked by the resentful cat and lets go of the rope which held the device's doors open the heavy doors thus slammed shut, killing the protagonist. Before entering the castle, he unintentionally killed a group of kittens next to their mothers, by throwing a stone. Its protagonist is an American tourist who visits the castle and asks the guide to briefly almost close the iron maiden on him, to know how a victim of this device would have felt. Iron Maiden: Stoker's short story The Squaw is focused on the iron maiden (referred to as "Iron Virgin" in the text) exhibited in Nuremberg Castle (the device really existed it was destroyed by the Allied bombing of 1944).Trope examples from Stoker's other works include: The Lair of the White Worm (film version only).Works by Stoker with their own trope pages: The Horror Writers of America's Bram Stoker Award is named in his honor. Most of these are less well known today, although The Jewel of Seven Stars and The Lair of the White Worm have also been adapted for screen. In his own lifetime, he was best known as a theater manager and critic.Īpart from Dracula, Stoker penned about a dozen other novels, as well as a number of short stories. Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) was an Irish author whose greatest and most lasting success was undoubtedly the prototypical vampire novel Dracula. Senator, don't let your judgement be warped by one heady moment.Probably be sick over the side in Charon's ferry too…' Downhill to the dark boat across the Styx. I did not want my corpse to be stuck with her in any case. I thanked Jove for her ruthless good sense. It struck me there might be a reason why Helena Justina whipped along at such a cracking pace: she did not want to be stuck in the wilderness with my corpse. In my experience, men who sit in corners are the ones to watch.Popular men who laugh at your jokes pose a threat which blatant villains can never command. If they start out with nothing I tend to get depressed because either they have just stripped off for someone else or, in my line of work, they are usually dead. I like my women in a few wisps of drapery: then I can hope for a chance to remove the wisps. John Brown may have taken Turner as his model when he launched his own doomed plot to arm and free blacks at Harpers Ferry, in 1859. But the insurrection also stirred the antislavery movement and shattered the prevailing notion that slaves were docile, or incapable of fighting for their freedom. Virginia blacks, both slave and free, lost some of their few liberties in the aftermath of the revolt. Describes the revolt, in which fifty-seven whites died. Mentions William Styron's novel, "The Confessions of Nat Turner" and talk of a movie by Spike Lee. His insurrection was one of the very few slave revolts in American history. Turner was a slave whose rebellion contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War, three decades later. Writer tells about empty houses in Southhampton County, Virginia, where the rebellion took place. A REPORTER AT LARGE about Nat Turner’s 1831 slave rebellion. It has always calmed me down, perked me up, made my worries and pressures feel like nothing. I've always loved to stand beneath trees, to linger at the edge of the sea, to touch the cool water of streams, to walk upon soft leaves instead of pavement. What made the experience of listening to The Nature Fix the most enjoyable? Bottom line: a good work and well worth the time to read but perhaps not to listen to. I needed to take frequent breaks from listening, during which I wondered if buying the print version of Nature Fix would not have been a better choice. The result leaves the reader unsure of what to take seriously, what is a joke or what is between the two? The narrator's forced joviality and unnecessary excursions up and down the sonic scale seriously detracted from the substance of the work. But the author, abetted by a way too chirpy, sing-song narrator, struggled to cover her lack of science street cred with cringeworthy puns and swipes clothed in condescending asides at more fringe views of our relation with nature. The arguments, backed at times with a blizzard of statistics, plowed through various scientific and academic circles to present an argument that intuitively seems correct: we evolved outdoors and our increasingly indoor, screen-obsessed culture is wreaking an awful toll on us, and particularly on our children. The sheer breadth and depth of information presented in this well-organized work was impressive. She then worked as a children's book editor in Bath, where she was also part of the team that established the Bath Festival of Children's Literature. After leaving school she went to university and gained a degree in Philosophy. She's determined not to let another ghost get the better of her, but she might not have any choice in the matter.ĪBOUT THE AUTHOREleanor Hawken spent her teenage years at boarding school, where there was many an opportunity to tell ghost stories by torchlight. Almost as soon as she arrives Suzy begins to feel watched, and she starts to see strange things. Unfortunately, that quickly looks unlikely. Poor Suzy thought she'd never get over the terrifying events from her time at St Marks, but she's resolved to put all thoughts of ghosts and murders (and school.) behind her as she sets off to stay in her aunt's country estate for the summer. A gripping, spooky sequel to THE BLUE LADY If it were a TV show, it would be called Thor and Order. But will a surprising suspect help uncover the truth, or offer only lies?
